Influence of Brain Neurochemical Systems on Frequency Spectra of Hippocampal Theta Rhythm
نویسنده
چکیده
Chronic experiments with rabbits have shown that electrical destruction of dorsal amygdalofugal pathways leads to complete and persisted blockade of hippocampal theta rhythm in contrast to ventral one. In intact animals, electroand chemostimulation of amygdala nuclei, hypothalamus, reticular formation and medial septum nucleus lead to the formation of well pronounced theta rhythm in hippocampus, but after destruction of the amygdalofugal pathway any theta-rhythm in this structure is not observed. Restoration of hippocampal EEG took place under intrahippocampal application of carbocholine and strychnine. It is proposed that one of the necessary conditions for the regulation of excitability of hippocampal neurons is the integrity of dorsal amygdalofugal pathways by means of which regulatory influence of amygdale on the hippotalamic neurosecretory cells is realized.

Anxiolytic drugs and altered hippocampal theta rhythms: the quantitative systems pharmacological approach.
The spirit of systems pharmacology was adopted to study the possible mechanisms of anxiolytic drugs on hippocampal electric patterns. The frequency of the hippocampal theta rhythm increases linearly with the intensity of electrical stimulation to the brainstem. The reduction of mean theta frequency in this paradigm predicts the clinical efficacy of anxiolytic drugs. The purpose of this study wa...
متن کاملAcetylcholine release in the hippocampus of the urethane anaesthetised rat positively correlates with both peak theta frequency and relative power in the theta band.
The need to achieve a clearer understanding of relations between hippocampal theta characteristics and cholinergic septohippocampal neuron activity, prompted us to re-examine, in the urethane-anaesthetised rat, the statistical relationships between the electrophysiological and neurochemical variables using a procedure which is believed to enhance significantly the degree of confidence with whic...
متن کاملDifferential effect of the damage to the lateral hypothalamic area on hippocampal theta rhythm during waking and paradoxical sleep.
Hippocampal theta rhythm was analyzed in rats subjected to bilateral, electrolytic lesions of the lateral hypothalamic (LH) region at different levels of its rostro-caudal axis. It was found that damage to the LH disturbed the hippocampal theta activity both during waking and paradoxical sleep. The main effect consisted in the lowering of the theta frequency. Typically, a decrease of frequency ...
متن کاملHippocampal theta rhythm synchronizes visual neurons in sleep and waking.
The hippocampal theta rhythm (theta) was reported to be associated with movements, attention, auditory processing, autonomic functions, learning and memory and postulated as an associator of discontiguous events. Since visual information includes temporal cues, our study was centered on the correlation between hippocampal theta rhythm and lateral geniculate activity. Phase relationships between...
متن کاملHippocampal Theta Modulation of Neocortical Spike Times and Gamma Rhythm: A Biophysical Model Study
The hippocampal theta and neocortical gamma rhythms are two prominent examples of oscillatory neuronal activity. The hippocampus has often been hypothesized to influence neocortical networks by its theta rhythm, and, recently, evidence for such a direct influence has been found. We examined a possible mechanism for this influence by means of a biophysical model study using conductance-based mod...
